Since I upgraded my PC, I have had a couple of my hard drives sitting gathering dust for a couple of months.

I had been looking around at the vast array of external hard drive enclosures, wondering which one to go for, when I came across the Icy Box 350.

.gadgets, technology

There are four versions available:-

IB-350U - IDE HDD to USB 2.0
IB-350U-BL - IDE HDD to USB 2.0 with Blue Light
IB-350UE-BL - IDE HDD to USB 2.0 & IEEE 1394a with Blue Light
IB-350US - IDE HDD to USB 2.0 & S-ATA

I went for the IB-350U-BL (with blue light), and I have to say it is impressive, it was very simple to set up, with no driver installation needed for 2000, XP machines onwards (although it does come with software if you need it).

The Specs

  • Plug & Play and Hot Swap
  • Blue Illuminated Casing
  • Noiseless Design
  • Aluminium Casing
  • Vertical and Horizontal settable
  • Supports ‘big’ drives (>250 GB)
  • Supports ATA6 / UDMA 133
  • Blue Illuminated Casing LEDs for Power and HDD access
  • USB 2.0 up to 56 MB/s
  • S-ATA up to 150 MB/s
  • IEEE 1394a up to 50 MB/s
  • External Data Cables included
  • External Power Supply A/C included (100~240v)

Requirements:

- Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP
- Macintosh OS 9.1 or later
- Available USB Port and/or Serial ATA Port / IEEE 1394a Port

For a simple stylish solution, the Icy Box is ideal, it is easy to set up, and the thing I liked about it most is that you can stack them on top of each other, now I wouldn’t recommend trying to stack ten of them, but you can stack at least four without any problems, with desk space at a premium, in a digital age where we all have so many gadgets this is an ideal solution.
