iPhone Stress Test Video

June 30, 2007 at 12:54 pm

The guys over at PC World have decided to stress test the iPhone.

They start of by putting it in a plastic bag with keys and shaking it about.

Next they try and scratch the screen with a key.

And finally they decide to drop the iPhone on various floors, including a concrete pavement.

You can watch the video over at PC World.

Apparently the iPhone stood up very well to these stress tests, with the only minor damage sustained when it was dropped on the concrete pavement.

UK will get a 3G iPhone, with Vodafone, T-Mobile and Carphone Warehouse Partnership

June 29, 2007 at 11:49 am

Guy J Keweny of Newswireless.net has revealed details of the new partnership between, Vodafone, T-Mobile and Carphone Warehouse, which will see the UK getting a 3G version of the iPhone.

Mr Keweny does seem to slam the iPhone in his article, with no foundation for his comments, all reports and reviews of the iPhone that I have read so far all seem to be positive, with the iPhone tipped to be Apple’s next revolutionary device.

Here are the full details

A new 3G (European) version of the iPhone will be launched Monday in the UK by Apple - in a join promotion with Vodafone, T-Mobile of Germany, and Carphone Warehouse. It should answer the disappointment with the US version of the iPhone which has been widely slammed for its poor performance as a phone.

Hints of the European launch emerged yesterday when Bill Condie of the London Evening Standard tipped Vodafone to be the official carrier, which will be confirmed Monday. But Voda is just part of the picture, with Apple going for a three-pronged European strategy with carriers - again, responding to disappointment in America with the exclusive deal with AT&T/Cingular.

Shipment date is still unknown, but “on course” for the year-end date predicted last October by Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Vodafone is currently in an ideal position to take on the iPhone, because its 3G network is hugely under-utilised. Pricing on mobile data is normally prohibitive, but Vodafone has recently revised its 3G data charges down, following “rip-off” complaints from users.

It may even be possible that European data prices will match, or be an improvement on the eye-watering charges announced by AT&T in North America.

The iPhone requires a high speed Internet connection to function properly, both because of its excellent Internet browsing capacity, and also because of its requirement for high quality video, which limits the appeal of the US version.

Writer Condie quoted sources inside Credit Suisse which suggested that France Telecom was in line for a franchise. That is unlikely to be fulfilled, possibly because of Orange’s insistence on “strong branding” on any handset it carries. Orange has irritated several phone makers by insisting on disabling technical and user-oriented features which didn’t sit with Orange commercial policy.

The appointment of Carphone Warehouse as a virtual network carrier will be a big surprise, however.

T-Mobile CEO Rene Oberman was reported to be “ecstatic” at getting a joint contract, according to insiders. He’s expected to be present at the Apple party Monday when the new device is unveiled.

The American version, using only 2G phone technology, goes on sale today. Queues have been forming outside Apple (and other) retail outlets in New York since Tuesday this week.

I have just spoken to the press offices of Vodafone, Carphonewarehouse, and T-Mobile, and guess what, all three of them remained tight lipped with the standard ‘No Comment’ response.

Whether we get a 3G or a 2G iPhone here in the UK, I am not really bothered, the fact that we may finally know which carrier is getting it is enough for me.

EME - Concept Mobile Phone

June 28, 2007 at 8:44 pm

Check out this concept mobile phone from designer Shao Wei Hang, the Evolutional Mobile Entertainment or EME.

The EME is a radical advancement in design, it is a mobile phone, which is equipped with music, video and gaming.

A dual screen setup is used in tandem for whatever function is currently being used. One screen is embedded on the outer shell. The other slides out from underneath. Used singularly, the shell displays functions for calling and basic manipulation of data such as contacts, photos, etc.

The “evolutional” aspect comes from th EME’s ability to expand its feature set if the user shares his/her experiences with other EMEs. That could be in the form of videos, music, or games. By doing so, bigger speakers would unlock and slide out, the screen may even become higher-res. The idea is to encourage the device’s evolution by exposing it to as many experiences as possible.

BBC iPlayer - New On Demand TV Service - Watch The Video

June 27, 2007 at 7:59 pm

The BBC have today announced the launch their new On Demand TV service, the service will begin on 27th July.UK users will be able to download popular show onto their PC, up to seven days after they have been broadcast.Later in the , the service will also be available via links from YouTube and could also appear on other websites such as MSN, Bebo, and Facebook.

At launch the application will only work on Windows PCs but a version for the Mac could be available by autumn.

The BBC intend to develop the iPlayer further, to include live streaming of programmes ,the BBC Radio Player and “series stacking”, which will allow users to download episodes from series retrospectively.

Director General Mark Thompson said: “Forty years ago, in July 1967, BBC Television launched colour TV.

“This July we are going to launch the iPlayer and in our view, the iPlayer is at least as big a redefinition of what TV can be, what radio can be, what broadcasting can be, as what colour television was 40 years ago.”

The iPlayer has been in development since 2003 and received final approval from the corporation’s governing body, the BBC Trust, in April 2007.

In that time it has been through numerous revisions, many demanded by the Trust and the broadcast and telecoms regulator Ofcom, whilst other broadcasters, such as ITV and Channel 4, have launched their own on-demand services.

“The market badly wanted to make the BBC go through a proper due process,” said Ashley Highfield, director of Future Media and technology at the BBC.

The lifetime of downloads is controlled by a digital rights managements system (DRM) supplied by Microsoft.

Some critics of the iPlayer, notably advocacy group the Open Source Consortium (OSC), has said that programmes should be made available without these digital locks.

The OSC has also criticised the BBC for initially releasing the iPlayer as a Windows-only system and have threatened to make a complaint to the European Commission.

The OSC argues that the system should work on all computer operating systems.

“I am fundamentally committed to universality, to getting the BBC iPlayer to everyone in the UK who pays their licence fee,” said Mr Highfield.

“This is the approach we have always taken but we have always started with the platform that reaches the most number of people and then rolled it out from there.”

Mr Highfield said that a version for Apple Macs could be available in autumn, with versions for Window’s Vista and mobile devices to follow.

Versions for Freeview and cable viewers are also planned with Virgin Media expected to roll out the service later this year.

Deals with other distributors such as MSN, AOL, telegraph.co.uk, Tiscali, Yahoo, MySpace, Blinkx and Bebo were also in the pipeline, whilst a commercial iPlayer for global audiences could launch in 2008 he said.

“Wherever you are on the internet you will come across BBC programmes,” said Mr Highfield.

iPhone Keyboard - Another New iPhone Feature Revealed

June 27, 2007 at 5:28 pm

More  iPhone news again today, Apple have released another video showing how the keyboard works, and confirms a new feature of the iPhone the ‘Magnifying Glass’, which allows you to move your cursor whilst typing.

Here are a few screenshots of the keyboard in action.

It would seem that they keyboard only works in portrait mode, and not in landscape, I am sure Apple have a reason for this, but it would have given you a much larger keyboard area if it ran in landscape mode.

You can view the full video here.
