This Asus EEE PC701 ultraportable laptop is going to be a big seller. Asus have managed to tick three very important boxes with this product -
(1) it is very portable
(2) it is very good value for money
(3) it provides the main facilities that you need (web, email, word processing, music, video, photography)
This will no doubt be a boon to business travellers, rather than lugging a large heavy corporate laptop around. It will be ideal for holiday makers who want to access a computer when they are off on holiday. It will be great for students working in library, classroom, or at a classmate’s. Perfect for checking email in the garden, or doing a bit of web-browsing in the lounge.
There are a number of compromises with the device. In order to keep prices low Asus have shipped it with Linux operating system. This is fine for most computing needs, but does mean that a regular Windows user might have issues. It is not a good gaming platform, but then few laptops are ideal for gaming anyway. The battery life is a little on the low side, but it is in keeping with typical full-size laptops.
Screen size or keyboard size might be an issue with some users, however there is nothing stopping them connecting a full-size keyboard or external monitor at home. If you want to replace the OS with Windows, you’d need to buy Windows software separately, and have reasonable computing competence. The machine is a little under-spec for running as a responsive Windows system.
Typical Windows user notes:
To quell some fears that regular Windows users may have with Linux.
- Linux desktop isn’t difficult to use, it is very similar to the Windows desktop.
- Linux isn’t affected by Windows-based viruses, trojans, and malware (feel safe!).
- Documentation is available in abundance, also one can ask for help in online forums
- Linux has open-source/free software that makes very good alternative to Windows software
(OpenOffice 2 gives most of the functionality of Microsoft Office) *
(The GIMP can do much the same as Adobe Photoshop) *
(Samba can provide network file sharing which works with Windows file shares)
(Mozilla’s Firefox web browser can be used instead of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer) *
(Evolution email client can be used instead of Microsoft Outlook)
(Wine Windows Emulator allows running native Windows software under Linux)
(ClamAV anti-virus as an alternative to McAfee, Sophos, AVG)
(MPlayer handles most formats of video playback - avi, mpg, wmv, mov)
* there are Windows versions of these applications, if you want to try them out
Technical guru / Linux geek notes:
- This is a dream come true.
- You can keep your computing capabilities close at hand.
- Tinkering with Linux whenever it suits you
- Programming and developing - Linux has a wealth of languages accessible (e.g. C, C++, Perl)
- Web developing - run Apache web server, PHP/Perl/Ruby, MySQL database on it
- Ideal for a network/security engineer running connectivity or penetration tests (traceroute, nmap, etc)
Asus made good decisions about the inclusions:
- Wifi, Bluetooth, Ethernet (wired) network, Modem, USB, Audio ports
Conclusion - very tempted to get one, even though I already have a decent, full-size 2.8kg laptop and a desktop pc.
[...] with those specs, if Packard Bell price it right, it may be competition for the much anticipated Asus Eee PC701.Via Pocket-Lint Published in: Laptops, Gadgets 0 [...]
Wine Windows Emulator allows running native Windows software under Linux
… Wine Is Not (an) Emulator… W.I.N.E.
It’s a collection of libraries that provide the same or similair functionality as Windows drivers such as Direct X.
