500,000 iPhones Sold This Weekend

With one of the most anticipated product launches of the year over, how did the iPhone do ?
According to analyst, Blackfriars, which has been monitoring stores, claimed that sales should top 500,000 for the first weekend. In it’s daily blog, it said:
“The bottom line: some analysts claimed that the iPhone launch would be a failure if Apple failed to sell 100,000 iPhones during the first weekend. Based upon the limited data we have, we believe that number was exceeded in just the first two to three hours. Blackfriars’ prediction is that Apple will sell 500,000 iPhones this weekend, and based upon limited sales rates reported, that number now looks quite achievable. The only question is whether the demand and iPhone supply is great enough that they might push past the million unit mark this weekend.â€Â
Apple must be pleased with such strong sales over the first weekend, it will be interesting to see if they can keep the sales up, over the coming weeks and months.

Gr8 job by Steve jobs…….he is out performing…..
I went to the closest AT&T corporate store in Irvine,CA waited in line for 4 hours and the manager was telling everyone that they don’t know how many they are getting but they where reminding everyone after the 30th person to be prepared for the sign up list. At the 6:00pm they sold 35 units 10 of them being 8gigs and the rest 4 and within 30 mins they were sold out! I went home extremely disappointed and called the local Apple store they said they still have 100 unites in their store. God knows how I drove down the freeway but I got mine by 9pm and I was super satisfied with the sales team of the apple store! Good job guys, Apple deserves it.
500,000 units is a good figure for a launch weekend, and understandable considering the degree of brand loyalty Apple users have. However, to put these sales into perspective, Apple would have to sell over four times this amount worldwide every day for a year just to equal Nokia’s current level of handset sales. WIth over one billion handsets sold every year worldwide, Apple has a considerable distance to go before catching up with the big players in the mobile market.
“Apple would have to sell over four times this amount worldwide every day for a year just to equal Nokia’s current level of handset sales”
And to put *that* into perspective, Jobs emphatically did not say he wanted to compete with Nokia. He said he wanted Apple to have shifted 10 million handsets worldwide by the end of ’08. I’d say 5% of your 18 month target in the first 48 hours is fairly impressive.
What an opening weekend!!!
500,000 X $500 = $250,000,000. That’s $250 million for those who dont count those zeros.
Hollywood movies can only dream of having such an opening weekend.
Has any other single mobile phone model sold as many? The Nokia 3210 perhaps, but there were 40 identical models that people could have bought.
What is the VW Beetle of mobile phones?
MaXiman, I realize your just putting things into perspective, and I agree Apple could never touch Nokia s sales on a world market. But also look at the fact that the iPhone will probably sell over 2 million units by the end of the month with their only handset available.
How Many different phones does Nokia have on the market?
Apple has one.
>WIth over one billion handsets sold every year worldwide, Apple has a considerable
>distance to go before catching up with the big players in the mobile market.
That’s true, but you can’t compare the iPhone to every other phone out there. You can realisticaly compare it to the top-end smartphones such as the N95, Blackjack, etc but to suggest that Apple has to match the sales of basic GSM phones in order to be considered a success as well is just silly. They’re just not interested in that market, at least for a while yet, as the margins are just so small and as a computer/media company their scope for adding value in that segment is too limited.
They may eventualy come out with low-end phones in the same way a they did with the iPod Shuffle, but that’s only worth doing when the brand is strongly established in the phone market.
> What is the VW Beetle of mobile phones?
Nokia 1100. I think they sold over 1 million units.
Is Steve Ballmer still laughing now?
Lets wait for a week. I am sure almost half would be returned!
bloomberg says sales #’s are 200,000. Who the hell is blackfriars?
I am an apple fan boy. Yes, Jobs said 10 million by the end of 08. Personally, I think he was hedging his bets so that later on people couldn’t say Apple underperformed. The number of phone sales they are shooting for is probably much higher. That “3 million phones ready to ship”, it was just a guess based on what turned out to be faulty info. Someone thought AT&T stores were getting 100 – 500 phones each. The number turned out to be 20 – 100. Apple stores were stocked with at least 500 phones. I think the average was over 1000. All AT&T stores sold out in hours. Some Apple stores have sold out. No reason to believe returns are higher than usual. The activation problem only affected 2% and appears to be solved now. My best guess for sales this weekend is 200,000. The rate of sales is going to slip but I think its going to stay close to 100,000 a month with Apple hitting the 10 million mark in 08. Now, for my prediction: At every apple event Jobs will announce a software/firmware update that solves some perceived iPhone shortcoming. These little announcements will boost sales without requiring more models.
The Nokia is Apple comparison is so faulty on so many levels–Apple sells in many markets Nokia does not, for one thing, but . . . what Apple has done in the well-established, highly-saturated cell phone market is nothing short of miraculous. When other big players have tried to make a dent in established markets–even less established markets–what kind of results do they have? Rarely has anyone matched Apple in hype or sales. How many iPod killers have there been? How is the Zune, compared to Apple’s overall MP3 market share?
Yet, when Apple rolls out a single new product into an already saturated marketplace when dozens of powerful competitors who own the market, that they could do so well out of the box is a marketing feat that I would challenge any company–Nokia included–to pull off in any other marketplace. Microsoft–one of the richest companies in the world that was able to get a sizeable share of the game machine market with X-box–has barely made a blip against Apple’s iPod. If Nokia can get 5% of the non-phone MP3 player market, or 3% of the desktop computer market, or 15% of the settop game machine market, I’ll be impressed with Nokia.
Nokia’s billions of handsets does nothing to diminish that marketing feat that Apple has accomplished here. And I guarantee you, a lot of folks in the cell phone industry are sitting up and taking notice.
Half of them are for sale on eBay
In 2006 Nokia sold around 350 million units, including 40 million “smartphones” which category iphone belongs to. According to researches this year the smartphone sector could grow to an estimated 110-120 million units worldwide and that is where Apple could potentially bite Nokia’s current 50% market share. Apple’s potential customer base even include those who never considered buying a smartphone before, they had a normal phone and an ipod for example.
One thing for sure: Apple can only reach its ambitious targets if they come out with more models, cheapers ones, operator-free ones and that happens on every market.
Well.. it looks like it will met the 1 Million sold in a week….
Who else is selling a phone for $500 to $600 and getting it? These phones are in a league of their own, just like everything else apple sells. BTW the last time we heard that apple couldn’t compete was when the ipod took on the mp3 player market, that was supposedly flooded.. The thing is I purchase a Rio and they stink comparatively. I’ve used a blackberry, it’s usable but nothing compared to an iPhone. Watch them carve a new market once again and hear everyone talking about “iPhone Killers” … People really are deceived by thinking they know before they try… Kinda like using windows, sure it works but you don’t know what you are missing until you use a Mac or get yourself an iPod to see how much easier to use, create your own playlists on the fly.. invaluable options to the discerning customer.
True sign of a good product is not how many buttons & options you can cram in one place… something Microsoft lives for. And something your ego thinks it wants… more more MORE!! But more does not equal better. Simplicity really is the key to a happy life & creates a product that people will enjoy using. Aside from the vocal tech junkies this phone will more than appease the majority of the market.
If it doesn’t make your life easier…. why are you doing it?
Unbelievable buzz of Apple
Their marketing works. Wow. Amazing. The fact is the US market is pretty much full of people who believe all the hype.
iPod is no way near as good as for an example Samsung YP5-serie is, still iPods sell more. Ignorance is bliss (for Apple).
And Nokia 1100 has sold over 200 million units…
Lucky you who live in the US… In Europe we´ll just have to wait a few more months…
But there´s certainly going to be some millions sold here too…
`Cause in Europe Nokia (made in Finland) and Ericson (made in Sweden) are considered just medium level gadgets, (we´ve heard quite a lot about the problems those companies have had) and we gladly wait a couple of months for high-class American quality.
 Go for it Apple!
