Check out the new Sidewinder Gaming mouse from Microsoft.

microsoft sidewinder mouse

This new mouse is a serious piece of kit for Gamers, with almost 5,000 adjustable settings, customizable for each of your games.

It features a 2,000 DPI resolution, with a processing speed of  7080 frames per second, there are five programmable buttons, and you can even program one to make your character spin 180 degrees.

It also features interchangeable weights and swappable pads which offer 3 levels of glide, and it even features an LCD that displays your current selected DPI.

It will go on sale in the US in October, for $79.99 (about £40).

I think I will definitely have to get one of these, I can see just one problem with it though, I won’t be able to blame my bad game-play on my mouse anymore.

Incredible, but what are the slide out numbers for, the programmable buttons maybe? (5, 10…)

    Hi Seth

I think they are the interchangeable weights so you can change the weighting on the mouse.

hmmm… looks cheap and ugly… being made by microsoft, it’s probably also awkward to use… i hope i’m wrong but it does look uncomfortable - e.g. very tall and bulky… probably gives you RSI just like Vista gives you brain damage.

Microsoft HID sucks… try some Logitech device!

I’ve never been that big of a fan of the crazy gaming mice. 5,000 programmable features? Do games even have that many controls??? None that I play. No, my mouse has two buttons, a scroll wheel, 2 programmable buttons and 2 buttons that control the dpi, and really, that’s all I need. Hell, I never even use the 2 programmable buttons except in Firefox (Forward/Back). This is just overkill.

This has been done before….Logitech has been doing it way before Microsoft.

Well this is only the concept model, the actual mouse is smaller (about the same size as the current Diamondback gaming mouse). It appears cheap because of the artist’s over-detailing. Although most mice are rather sucky, this one won’t be too bad. Not to say that it won’t suck because it comes from Microsoft. But hey Vista isn’t that bad, it was just a disappointment to the community is all.

If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. There are games with enough controls to completely overtake your keyboard, including combo’s of CTRL, ALT and Shift, so this mouse will definately have a home with those gamers. You need to stop playing card games and get into something good, like C&C.

The best thing Logitech has on that site is a 7 button 2 wheel mouse. That’s not the same thing. That’s not even close.

Just because you hate Windows (and btw - that stopped being “leet” 5 years ago) is no reason to instantly hate Microsoft’s hardware. The gaming controllers they have ben coming out with for years have alays been among the best in the market. Perfect example is the xbox. The best controller ever designed was the second generation xbox controller.

It should work fine on Linux if you’re willing to set up all the buttons and shit manually, which’d take a while, but hey, I see no reason why it wouldn’t work on Linux.

Also, I’d just like to add Blair has a good point, I’m certainly no windows fan, but Microsoft does have some good hardware and games, so, don’t just ignore them… totally :)

Razer (http://www.razerzone.com/) most likely makes this for Microsoft. I wouldn’t be surprised, they made the Habu before, which Microsoft branded but Razer designed.

This mouse works fine under linux out of the box, both the mouse and evdev xorg drivers know what it is. the macro record button and game launcher button don’t seem to register with it yet, but i’m not sure if i need to xmodmap it or not. the rest are all normal.

This looks good but I bet it ends up failing alot more than a ‘normal’ mouse.

This is a fine mouse, a little pricey but it works great, the only real problem is that it’s customizability is bullshit, ten buttons and five of them are dedicated to mouse functions, the weights and extra feet are all good and fine, but with it’s shy number of buttons that matter it’ll never pass as the daily driver for most geeks, I use a logitech mxlazer most of the time because of that.
