Concept – The Lobster Multimedia Device
Check out this concept multimedia device from designer Danilo Mangini.

It features a main multimedia unit, then a bunch of modules you plug in for various functions.

There’s an MP3 module, a GPS one, a hard drive, a camera, a mobile phone and a heart rate monitor.

Interesting design, and maybe a glimpse at some of the multifunctional devices to come in the future.

vereh cool.
does it run windows ce?
VERY good idea. Simple yet complex. I would like to see this in real life in the future
It wont work. The problem is that the modules are all a pain in the but to look after, and all the features can be built in to the main unit. Minolta tried this concept with cameras in the late 80’s or early 90’s. Plug in cards to add features to the camera, the problem being the competition just added “all” the features into their camera so no one brought minolta cameras.
I don’t know what Rob is talking about. I worked in a camera shop when Minolta had those cameras. They sold very well, and only a couple of the functions that the cards provided have ever made it into other cameras. I personally own (and still use) the Minolta 8000i and have several cards for it.
I sure would buy one if I had the oppotunity. Think of it…U could buy what u would like…I would like a cool mobile with only…let me see…camera, cardiometer and the harddisc…I wouldn’t need MP3….hmm…maybe the GPS would come in handy, should I go to the states again someday
Great post! Thank you.
I think it’s a great concepto, maybe in the 80’s it didnt work, but in the eighties microprocessing, modular units, and standards weren’t what they are now. Great, let’s just keep on going modular.
Very poor. All this does is add bulk. There are already mobile phones with mp3, gps, hard disk (aka memory card) and camera. Equivalent modular technology is always bigger than the equivalent monolith. The market is already flooded with every possible combination so what is there to gain with this apart from a bigger lump in your pocket? Okay some people may want that…
Sony attempted a modular product back in the early 80’s. I was one of the first trained to service it. After my training, I never saw one in the field. I saw a total of one advertisement,,,on sale.
This seems cool enough. I wonder how sweat would effect the connections.
Didn’t Handspring try the modular gadget thing also?
ugh.
its not very good.
just like Niel said, all it does is add bulk. Why does it need to be modular, when you could just have it all built into the one device which would be like half the size of all the modules together.
My mobile phone is smaller than that and it does all of that, apart from the cardiometer
Quite a nice idea,
very innovative and modern but it will never be very popular i dont think.
The kind of people to buy this would probably be people like me that just buy things because they look cool.
you ppl are straight up consumers
I want to know more about its availablelity in India………
I want one of those!
Does it get slower as you attach more modules?
