O2 Updates To EDGE - Are They Getting Ready For The iPhone ?

O2 are updating their GPRS infrastructure from GPRS to EDGE, now I can see no other reason why they would do this other than in preparation for the iPhone, which runs on the EDGE network.

A member over at Macrumors has a screenshot of the update notice he received about O2 upgrading to EDGE.

The person who posted the info on Macrumors works for O2, this is what he had to say:

“I work at o2 - this message appeared on the intranet yesterday.

Why would o2 upgrade their kit from GPRS to EDGE when they’re focusing on 3G otherwise? ”

I tend to agree with the poster and can’t see any other reason why O2 would be doing this, except to get ready for the iPhone UK launch.

It looks like we may not get a 3G iPhone in the UK after all, and to be honest I am not really bothered, as long as they hurry up and confirm when the iPhone UK launch will happen I will be happy.

    I revieved confirmation of o2! this morning stating “As for now o2 are not launching this handset, i know the press states other wise but please know that this is just a rumor, when the handset is coming to our network we will update our website within 3 month of it being launched, Hope this clarrifys martin the launch date of the apple iphone, thank you for your time”.

    Thanks for the information, this is a standard repsonse from O2, they have had to sign a confidentialilty agreement and won’t be able to onfirm anything until the possible laucch tomorrow.

    I was told by someone who works at Orange that they would be getting the handset within 3 weeks… When I contacted Orange directly though, they said they hadn’t even heard about the iphone!

    I did the same with 02, and they are also saying that they are “currently not stocking the apple iphone or planning to in the near future”.

    I wish someone who hurry up and start selling it here in the uk!

    Also adding to this…the new nokia N81 phone looks absolutely awesome, and is giving apple a run for their money (much better looking than the N95) but no carrier in the uk seems to have heard of this phone, even though it’s lauch date was suppose to be 29th of August….

    Oh well, I shant hold my breath…
