Sales in the Sony PS3 have risen over 250% in the US and have also overtaken the Wii in Japan for the first time.

Latest figures from the US show price-cutting there has seen sales leap by around 250 per cent in the week ending 11 November, compared to weeks before the October price snip and launch of the new 40GB model.

In Japan, a traditional Nintendo stronghold, it’s the same story with the PS3 finally managing to outsell the mighty Wii to the tune of over 20,000 consoles in the last week.

I suspect that the main reason the PS3 overtook the Wii in Japan is because of the worldwide shortage of the Nintendo Wii.

Stock of the Wii is selling out as soon as it hits the shelves, and the demand over the Christmas period is going to be huge, but Nintendo seem to have trouble keeping up with the demand for the Wii, so I suspect a lot of people who can’t get their hands on a Wii will be buying a PS3.
