Linux and solar power. Sweet. It’s nice to see some cool computers starting to hit the market place with OSes other then Windows and OSX.
if they could just mix up the 10 inch screen with the tiny hardware into a nice linux tablet, it would have been a bulz eye! and the solar panel rocks! I want one!
All of which gets a little more credibility now that Google are in the energy industry.
And in related news, Esso issue a statement claiming that they’re entering the search market…
Wow. Now I am impressed. And only $400? This would be great for traveling!

It would be great to bash out some HTML ideas while camping…….oh c’mon! People read books!
This machine actually cost 99$ and is in different options

For $400 you might as well get yourself an Asus Eee PC.

you don’t have to want to code while campling to find this a very intriguing idea. to be able to work while not being on the grid is an AWESOME idea.
The new Asus EEE PC laptop draws only 22 watts of power, less than this rig (10 watts for monitor, 18 watts for PC). It’s under $400 retail and shipping now.
It would be great if this could be powered from PoE (when 802.3at arrives)
Fixed the post now reads 8 Watts not 18 Watts of power
A 1.25 Ghz iBook G4 from a few years ago draws 16.5w and that includes a 12″ screen and keyboard, touchpad and a battery. Linux also runs quite nicely on this ibook. You can get a used one for way less than $500 and it does not need to be plugged in to work.
Kind of underwhelming compared to OLPC which costs ~400 (assuming you pay to get one and give one away) which is a fully functional laptop that can run on 2W and be powered by solar or a hand crank.
The $99 version linked above is pretty crippled. No storage, 486SX compatible (no floating point). I think the price quoted was for a more functional system.
But the title isn’t fixed :).
Incredible, that’s certainly a real cool piece of device using only 8W of power. However, I’d be more interested to know the specification of the device, that is, what processor is it running on, the memory and the storage space available.
Hi Nori
I have fixed the article title, unfortunately I can’t change the one on digg, I guess I should check my posts before publishing them
Pretty impressive. I’d love to see some specs.
Added the specs for the people that wanted to know
What kind of monitor is that in the picture? I’ve been looking for a tiny one.
this can go to better..
Hi Interrobang.
The monitor pictured is a 10.4 inch LCD, check out the Aleutia product page, but I don’t think they sell it seperately.
Thank you, I’ll look there. It’d be nice if I could buy one separately, since I already have a Linux computer.

I like the minimalistic aproach behind the design of this computer.

The optional screen would seem like a useful addition though… so it’s really 18 watts. Still not bad.
I’ve expored a link http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS6372429785.html provided above and forund tome traps. This device originally manufactured by E-Way Technologies is fully SiS-based — the whole system is embedded into SiS500 SoC. It means, first, that the chip will relatively soon grow old and lose its electrical specs (that is characteristic for all SiS chips) — rare SiS mainboard lives over 3-4 years; then, it means VGA badly supported by existing drivers because SiS do not like to discover their specs to Linux community or to develop fine (maybe even binary) Linux drivers by themselves. All said above together with evident overpricing by Aleutia makes this gadget not a very good buy.
Neat little box. Puppy Linux is a very nice operating system also… if only i had the money to sink into buying this
Puppy is a great choice, but with a solar panel big enough to power it and the screen… Don’t you think it’ll be a little pricey?

Very neat little item.
Wow, that’s one nice device, and further illustrates a point I recently made about innovation, Linux and comodity hardware.

I have one of these, it isn’t under the same name as you are calling it.
It hardly functions well as a terminal services client….
this is all good. but can it make coffee? if not then phuck it
I’m guessing you all have forgot what 200 mhz is like. I have Puppy (excellent distro for old comps, by the way) on a 400 mhz celeron (augh) and it chokes to death just opening notepad (kate).
when we hava a windows xp pre pc that size, with 1gb rom min. and 1.6 Ghz cpu min. and 100% DX9.0c video card. we will talk.
