Intel’s Latest Gaming Platform - Skulltrail
The guys over at HotHardware have managed to get a sneak peak at Intel’s new gaming platform, Skulltrail.

Skulltrail is built around server class hardware, that has been reconfigured for the gaming market.

The new motherboard featured in the pictures will support dual quad core Penryn Xeon processors, SLI, and has four PCIe slots.

It also features six USB ports, six SATA ports, dual eSata ports, Firewire and Gigabit Ethernet.
From the looks of the specs this is going to be an amazing platform to build some serious gaming PC’s on and I suspect this isn’t going to be cheap either.

When it is going to appear on the market?
Not sure yet, they haven’t released an exact date for it yet.
Can anyone say over-power, this wouldn’t even be feasible, besides the cost would be around 500 just for the mobo!!!
“Made around server class hardware” means it will be made for rack mounts only?
Very nice - I look forward to this one.
Hi baracuda, I think it was developed from server class hardware and changed to be suitable for standard pc’s.
Heh, seen this sorta thing before. AMD’s 4×4 anyone?
The 4×4 has been out a while now, I think intel finally realised that now that AMD is capable of an 8 core gaming system, they need to catch the f**k up!
I’m sad that AMD is slipping so far behind
I used to love them, but they’re truly inferior now. C’mon, bring back the competition AMD!
This is retarded. Most games do not even take advantage of our almost standard dual core processors. Why makes you think they are going to use 8 processors?

Look at crysis… its pretty bloody demanding… think back a few years ago, when we were playing games which required 800mhz processors and 16mb graphics cards.. seems long time ago but it really isnt.. the world around us is changing much faster than we realise, technology in general is ahead of itself.
A nice board like this and they use some crappy chipset fan instead of a heatsink? a year from now when that fan starts going bad people are really going to regret this purchase.
OK when AMD releeased its 4×4 solution they only had a dual core on the market and intel had a quad core out all ready. A year later AMD puts out a crappy Quad core that cant even beet thier own dual core in bench marking. AMD is failing just like Intel did 7-8 years ago. They will come back at sometime but for now Intel Reigns supreme. Dont belive it go look at the benchmarks at any website you choose.
