Apple today unveiled the iPhone SDK (software development kit) at a special event at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. Apple executives said the SDK provides developers with the same tools it uses to develop applications for the iPhone and iPod touch.

“We’re excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community with potentially thousands of native applications for iPhone and iPod touch,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.

 The iPhone will now support enterprise software and Microsoft Exchange will now be built into the iPhone giving users push email, push contact, push calendar and a global address list.

The iPhone SDK features the same API’s and tools that Apple uses to build their own applications for the iPhone.

So you can expect a host of cool iPhone apps coming to the iPhone.

A beta version is being released today to developers and the rest of us with get it in June with a complete update coming as the iPhone 2.0 update.

Applications for the iPhone will be built on a Mac using Xcode, the same development tool used to build Mac OS X applications. Using the tool, developers can memory usage and other ways that applications can affect the iPhone hardware.

Apple also introduced a new development tool called iPhone Simulator. This tool runs on a Mac, and simulates the entire API stack of the iPhone OS. Apple said that you can run your iPhone application in the simulator, which gives developers an incredible turnaround time on development.
