Scientists maybe a step closer to creating materials that will allow people and other objects to go invisible by redirecting  light around 3D objects using metamaterials. Which are artificially engineered structures created at a nano scale that contain optical properties not found in nature.

The new work moves scientists a step closer to hiding people and objects from visible light, which could have broad applications, including military ones.

Metamaterials are mixtures of metal and circuit board materials such as ceramic, Teflon or fiber composite. They are designed to bend visible light in a way that ordinary materials don’t. Scientists are trying to use them to bend light around objects so they don’t create reflections or shadows.

  • This is pretty cool. I hope they can refine it and get it working well.

This stuff is pretty old, seen it atleast a year ago, and I’m pretty confident it’s fake, metamaterials currently known can only be used for cloaking a small band of wavelenghts, and even that is highly experimental.

You can’t call it “old”. The research and development of such technology is going to take a long time due to its complexity, so it is rather young (when you consider how long it’ll be before this stuff becomes truly useful). And there have been successful tests where light has been bent around small objects. Not rendering them 100% invisible mind you, but bent nonetheless.
