PostHeaderIcon Behind the E Ink Esquire Cover

Check out what was behind the Esquire’s E Ink cover thanks to Phil at MAKE. He’s taken the cover apart and in addition to the E-Ink display, found lithium cells, printed circuit boards, and flash-programmable microcontrollers, which could be partially hacked or reprogrammed.

The E-Ink panel is segmented (11 on top, 3 on bottom), which means you cant use the entire rectangle for display.

While you can change the timing for each section’s blinking, the potential for real customization seems limited. Instead you could only change when each section blinks or doesn’t blink (not much fun, I know)

 

  • It has a programming header, 5-pin ISP.
  • It has a Microchip PIC 12f629 which is flash programmable, 8 pin.
  • It has 6 lithium coin cell CR2016s, 3 volts each.
  • There are 2 e-ink screens with flex connections (these are pricey connections). It looks like it was made to be reprogrammed and different screens.
  • The top screen 11 segments, the bottom has 3.
  • It was design 06/04/2008.
  • The PCB was made by Forewin (Chinese firm?).
  • Half thickness, 2 layer board (FR4).
