Microsoft extends the shelf life of XP

September 28, 2007 at 12:31 pm

Microsoft was scheduled to stop selling XP in January 2008, but they have now extended the date to the 30th June 2008.

microsoft extends the shelf life of XP

They have said that this is to help customers that needed more time to make the switch to vista

Microsoft’s Windows product manager Mike Nash, said: “…maybe we were a little ambitious to think that we would need to make Windows XP available for only a year after the release of Windows Vista.”

He added that most of the other operating systems that Microsoft has produced were available for about two years after a new version shipped.

Mr Nash said that up to the summer of 2007 Microsoft had sold more than 60 million licences for Vista. This put it on track to be the fastest selling operating system in Microsoft’s history.

The XP date change applies to retailers and other manufacturers who sell Microsoft products. Independent firms that use Windows XP when installing and maintaining computers and networks for businesses can continue to offer it as an option until 30 January 2009.

Microsoft is also extending the availability of the cut-down version of XP, called Starter Edition, until 30 June 2010.

This laptop mouse has some very interesting features including 1GB of flash memory built in to its transceiver.

Another interesting feature is the way it recharges, using an innovative magnetic charging system, the charging cord magnetically connects at one end to the underside of the mouse, and the other to the tip of the transceiver. This gives you the ability to charge the mouse whilst you are still using it.

It also features advanced wireless technology that gives you the option to either connect via Blue-tooth or 2.4GHZ wireless.

It will go on sale in October for $99 (about £50)

Microsoft And Siemens VDO AG Confirm In Car Entertainment Partnership

September 8, 2007 at 12:34 pm

Microsoft and Siemens VDO have confirmed a partnership to co develop in car navigation systems and entertainment systems.

microsoft

The two companies said on Friday the first Siemens products based on Microsoft software should go into production in 2009.

Siemens VDO also makes driver-assistance and safety systems.

“In addition, Siemens VDO will also be able to actively help shape Microsoft Auto and license platform-compliant applications, such as navigation functions, for third-party suppliers,” a joint statement from the two companies said.

The companies said their first milestone would be a multimedia platform that would make it possible to integrate consumer-electronic functions and portable devices.

“Consequently, new solutions in consumer electronics will be adapted for in-vehicle use more quickly and easily, since it will only be necessary to add individual software components,” they said.

“This helps close the gap between the short development cycles in communications and information technology and the comparatively long product cycles in automotive engineering.”

Sounds like an intersting partnership, lets just hope there are no BSOD’s when you are doing 70 down the motorway.

Xbox 360 premium Gets HDMI

August 9, 2007 at 5:30 pm

Microsoft have announced that their Xbox 360 premium console now comes with a HDMI out.

Here’s Microsoft’s official statement:

“Yes, we are offering an HDMI port for Xbox 360 simply as another choice in Xbox 360 owners’ games and entertainment experience. Retailers are gradually introducing HDMI-enabled Xbox 360s into the channel to meet demand.”

Thats seem pretty cool, it seems like this is only in the US at the moment but this is bound to filter over to the UK soon.

I was considering getting an Xbox 360 Elite when they are available here, but if the premium console comes with HDMI out I may go for one of those instead, depending on the pricing compared to the Elite.

2 Billion Dollar Software Piracy Ring Smashed

July 26, 2007 at 12:13 pm

A Chinese software piracy ring, which has distributed an estimated $2 billion worth of fake software has been smashed in a raid by the FBI.

The FBI seized over 290,000 fake cd’s worth over $500 million, and the FBI and China’s Public Security Bureau have arrested 25 people during this two week anti piracy operation.

The raid, dubbed Operation Summer Solstice is reported to be the biggest ever world wide, and the FBI has said that they had been working to net this gang for a couple of years.

The majority of the software seized included 13 versions of Microsoft’s most popular programs including Windows Vista, XP, Server and Office.

The gang sold versions of these programs in eight languages including Croatian and Dutch.

In a statement Microsoft said vital information that helped to track down the pirates came from its Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) scheme.

Microsoft said information gathered by WGA from more than 1,000 fake copies produced by the counterfeiters and sold around the world helped law enforcement agencies home in on the pirates. Fake software produced by the group was found in 27 countries.

“Countries around the world are expected to experience a significant decrease in the volume of counterfeit software as a direct result of this action,” said Microsoft in its statement.
