Google Working on a Desktop Linux - Goobuntu

August 25, 2007 at 4:01 pm

Google is preparing its own Ubuntu distribution of Linux for the desktop called Goobuntu, based on Debian and the Gnome desktop.

Goobuntu

Google could possibly take on Microsoft in its core business which is desktop software.

Google have refused to release any further details at the moment, but it is possible that Google plans to distribute Goobuntu to the general public.

However, entering the desktop software world would be a huge step and would require a lot of work to make Goobuntu as easy to use as XP.

Whatever Google’s intentions, the input of Google engineers and developers, writing new features and fixing bugs, will be a huge boost to the Ubuntu project.

Ubuntu, funded by the South African Internet multimillionaire and occasional cosmonaut Mark Shuttleworth, is already emerging as a leader in the desktop Linux world.

Google steps it up a gear, with Google Gears

June 3, 2007 at 3:14 pm

google, gadgets, technology

Google has announced the launch of its new software, ‘Google Gears‘.

Google Gears is designed to allow users to access online services like e-mail, news readers and online calendars when they are offline.

This will enable users to use their computer in places where there is no internet connection.

Google have revealed that they intend Google Gears to be an open source project, and they are working with the likes of Adobe and Moxilla, to create a single standard technology which will work across all the major platforms.

According to Google, this new technology ‘builds on the Web’s existing programming model by introducing new JavaScript APIs for sophisticated data storage, application caching, and multi-threading features,”

I think this is going to be a great application, enabling you to view information offline that your browser has stored, when you were last online.

Microsoft Vista 30 days after install

May 17, 2007 at 5:38 pm

VistaIts exactly 30 days since I installed Vista on my PC, I have to say I was a little nervous about doing it at first. I downloaded the Microsoft Vista Upgrade Advisor and ran it, everything seemed to go ok and the report showed only a few minor software issues, so I decided to go for it.

I scoured the web for information on Vista after reading many articles and tips I decided to buy Vista Home Premium 32 Bit edition, I managed to get myself an OEM copy from Microdirect for about £74 including the VAT & Delivery.

It arrived the next day, I had already backed up all my data, so I decided to do a clean install, I booted my PC, ran the interactive setup, formatted the PC’s hard drive and began the install. It took about 30 minutes, I rebooted and was ready for the usual problems that you get with a fresh install of XP, I have to say I was more than a little surprised, all my hardware was there and everything seemed ok. Here’s the spec of my PC, nothing spectacular:- Read more
