Flexible Silicon Chips Create Opportunities for Biomedical Implants
Normally fragile and brittle silicon chips have been made to bend and fold, paving the way for a new generation of flexible electronic devices such as biomedical implants, advanced brain implants, health monitors or smart clothing. These complex devices consist of concertina-like folds of ultra-thin silicon bonded to sheets of rubber.

Nintendo bottoms out on Greenpeace scores
Greenpeace releases a “Guide to Greener Electronics” guide on a regular basis which tracks how “green” technology companies are on a scale from 0-10. Their latest guide features 18 companies, and Nintendo came in dead last. Greenpeace said Microsoft, Philips and Panasonic also scored fairly low, with 4.7, 4.3 and 4.7 respectively.

Not only did they come in dead last, they scored only a measly 0.3 of 10. Their closest competitor (Philips) scored a full four points higher. There are a total of nine different categories that are taken into account for the score. Apparently the only thing Nintendo managed to do was establish a Green Procurement Standards for Suppliers. They weren’t able to actually provide this information, only mention that they had it. That gave them a “Partially Bad” on Chemicals Management, and “Bad” on everything else.

Virus Spreading Digital Photo Frames from China
Computer Associates has uncovered the Mocmex virus embedded into a digital photo frame made in China. According to SANS, they have found more than four other trojans in different brand of photo frames sold at Best-buy, Costco, Target, and Sam’s Club. Computer Associates also has traces of the virus backdoored to a specific group in China. If you have concerns with recent purchase of your digital photo frames, I suggest you read the report the how-to and SANS contact information from San Francisco Chronicle.

The Mocmex was first identified as a Trojan horse that collected online games passwords, further studies has revealed its ability to get around more than hundred antivirus vendors and Windows security layers. The malware infected PC only ( Winblow !, what else?), and known to download files and hid them randomly with hard to trace patterns, it would then propagated to another PC or other portable storage device as a shelter as soon as it’s plugged into one. CA says Mocmex’s strength is more than just a simple game-password collector, it has the potential for a much bigger attack with its nature to collect personal and private data.

Google Android
Texas Instruments Inc will demonstrate a prototype cell phone based on Android at the Mobile World Congress trade show, the highly anticipated mobile phone operating system being built by Google.
The device will allow “one button access” to key applications such as Web browsing, e-mail, messaging and video, making it easier for consumers to use such features. The prototype handset will run on TI’s OMAP850 phone processor, which includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth short-range wireless connectivity.
Google had said while a number of companies would demonstrate Android products at the wireless trade show, the prototypes would give no real indication of the actual devices customers would ultimately be able to buy. TI is part of a group of about 30 companies that said they would support Google’s operating system, which is based on Linux, an open-source software platform. UK chip designer ARM Holdings is also expected to show prototypes of devices based on Android at the show.

Yahoo Rejects Microsoft bid
Yahoo has rejected Microsoft’s $44.6 billion takeover bid, says a Wall Street Journal source allegedly close to the deal. After a last-minute meeting yesterday, Yahoo’s board is said to have rebuffed the offer from Microsoft believing that the Windows developer is acting out of opportunism.

The buyout offer was an attempt to prey on Yahoo at a weak point in its history, the rumored insider says. Although the offer of $31 per share is significantly higher than Yahoo’s stock value at the time of the proposal, the search engine firm’s executives reportedly believe that this offer is undervalued and are waiting for a bid of $40 per share or more, which could raise the worth of the bid to $56 billion.

World’s First Updatable Holographic Display
Researchers at the University of Arizona have broken a technological barrier by making three-dimensional holographic displays that can be erased and rewritten in minutes. The holographic displays – which are viewed without special eyewear – are the first updatable three-dimensional displays with memory ever to be developed, making them ideal tools for medical, industrial and military applications that require “situational awareness.”
The device basically consists of a special plastic film sandwiched between two pieces of glass, each coated with a transparent electrode. The images are “written” into the light-sensitive plastic, called a photorefractive polymer, using laser beams and an externally applied electric field. The scientists take pictures of an object or scene from many two-dimensional perspectives as they scan their object, and the holographic display assembles the two-dimensional perspectives into a three-dimensional picture.

Google Teams with Dell to Topple iPhone
There is talk of Google & Dell teaming up to take on the Apple iPhone. The two biggest dogs in their respective yards, could pool together their resources and may just may have enough musclepower to topple the iPhone behemoth. Neither Google nor Dell are confirming (or denying) these rumors, so this is reduced to just rumblings on the Interweb at this point. Dell has dabbled in the PDA market before, so it’s only a short leap to arrive in smartphone territory. Current word has the Google-Dell hybrid making some of announcement at the 3GSM World Conference in Barcelona next month. We will keep you posted.
