One Million 3G iPhones Sold in One Weekend !!
Apple has sold a massive one million iPhone’s since Friday. Nice one Apple, thats a great acheivement, its just a shame that the companies you teamed up with in the UK to sell the iPhone couldn’t get things right. Between the Carphone Warehouse and the O2 stores, they completly messed up the lauch of the 3G iPhone.

Apple gets tough on the iPhone unlockers in the next software update

Apple have confirmed what they intend to do about unlocked iPhones, they have released the following statement:-
Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone’s software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed.
Apple plans to release the next iPhone software update, containing many new features including the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store (www.itunes.com), later this week. Apple strongly discourages users from installing unauthorized unlocking programs on their iPhones. Users who make unauthorized modifications to the software on their iPhone violate their iPhone software license agreement and void their warranty.
The permanent inability to use an iPhone due to installing unlocking software is not covered under the iPhone’s warranty.
Well it seems pretty clear that they are going to do everything they can to stop people using unlocked iPhones, it is not surprising considering they are getting a share of revenue from the mobile phone providers, and with providers like o2 reportedly paying Apple 40% of their revenue in the UK, who can blame them.
I am starting to wonder whether or not to get the iPhone when it hits the UK, don’t get me wrong I really wan’t an iPhone the problem is I don’t fancy being tied into an 18 month contract, especially with the possibility of a 3G iPhone coming next year.

Apple To Announce iPhone UK Launch Tuesday 18th September
Apple are holding a special press event in London on Tuesday the 18th of September at its flagship store in Regent Street at 10 AM GMT (5AM EST).

At the special event called ‘Mum is no longer the word’, Apple are expected to announce the iPhone UK launch date, and probably dates for the rest of Europe as well.
Now whether they will be announcing a new 16GB 3G iPhone to be added to the iPhone line up or the current iPhone for the UK and Europe remains to be seen.
This is a tough one to predict, as we have recently seen leaked T-Mobile adverts showing a 16GB iPhone, and also O2 (who are tipped to be the UK carrier) have just updated their network to EDGE.

To be honest, I am not particularly bothered which way it goes, as long as Apple give us a launch date for the iPhone UK, I will be happy.

Leaked T-Mobile Ads Reveals 3G iPhone & European Launch Date
Check out this leaked T-Mobile advert, which reports the the European iPhone will be launched on the 12th of November.

Whether this will coincide with the iPhone UK launch remains to be seen, the advert shows that the European model will be a 16GB version with a 2 mega-pixel camera and that it will run on 3G (HDSPA).
The advert also shows that this new 3G model will retail for €499 (about £340).
Whether this is true or not remains to be seen, it could just be one of the many rumors floating around cyberspace about the iPhone UK and European launch.
But if Apple did release a 3G phone in Europe, which was a new model to the iPhone line up, they could also release it in the US, and considering the recent price reductions in the US this could be a smart move, as rather than replacing the current iPhone with a new 3G model, all they are doing is adding it to their current range at a higher cost.

O2 Updates To EDGE - Are They Getting Ready For The iPhone ?
O2 are updating their GPRS infrastructure from GPRS to EDGE, now I can see no other reason why they would do this other than in preparation for the iPhone, which runs on the EDGE network.

A member over at Macrumors has a screenshot of the update notice he received about O2 upgrading to EDGE.
The person who posted the info on Macrumors works for O2, this is what he had to say:
“I work at o2 - this message appeared on the intranet yesterday.
Why would o2 upgrade their kit from GPRS to EDGE when they’re focusing on 3G otherwise? ”
I tend to agree with the poster and can’t see any other reason why O2 would be doing this, except to get ready for the iPhone UK launch.
It looks like we may not get a 3G iPhone in the UK after all, and to be honest I am not really bothered, as long as they hurry up and confirm when the iPhone UK launch will happen I will be happy.

iPhone Price Reduced To Make Way For New 3G iPhone
At todays Apple special event, Steve Jobs announced that the 8GB iPhone would be reduced from $599 to $399.
He said that he wanted to make the iPhone available to everyone at a reduced cost, he didn’t even mention the 4GB iPhone but if you look at the Apple Store its gone, you can now only buy the 8GB one.

I can see only one reason for doing this, Apple have a new iPhone coming soon, a 3G version for Europe and the UK, which they will release in the US as well.
Now if Apple had released a 3G iPhone in the UK and Europe, without offering it to US customers at a decent price, there would have been a lot of unhappy iPhone owners in the US, but by reducing the price of the current iPhone Apple have paved the way for a more expensive 3G version, which could retail for $599.
You may be sceptical about this but there is good logic behind it, if Apple released their current iPhone in the UK and Europe they would not sell anywhere near the amount of iPhones as they would if they released a 3G version.
The 2.5G network or Edge which the iPhone runs on is very limited in Europe, with only one carrier in the Uk offering it.
3G is massive in the UK, all of the major mobile phone operators run it, and virtually every smart phone sold is 3G.
I suspect we will see an announcement in the very near future about a 3G iPhone for the UK and Europe, and it will probably be available to by over here November or December, just in time for the Christmas rush.
Update: the 4GB iPhone is now available at the Apple Store for $299.

Rumor - 3G iPhone UK Will Be Annouced Today
According to T3, Apple will be announcing the launch of a second generation iPhone today, which will be a 3G version for Europe.

T3 are reporting that a source at the BBC have confirmed that the iPhone UK will be announced today and that it will be 3G.
This would be ideal as a non 3G version for the UK really wouldn’t make sense for Apple.
I guess we will have to wait till later to see if this rumor pans out.
Check back later for an update on todays Apple event, or subscribe to our RSS Feed for the latest details.

European iPhone Deal To Be Confirmed By Friday

Last week I reported on a story by Newswireless.net about the upcoming partnership between Apple, Vodafone, T-Mobile Germany and the Carphonewarehouse regarding the European iPhone launch.
Well its seems Mr Kewney, has more details for us, and apparently Apple are waiting until they have sold over 1 million iPhones, before they will announce the European details. Will they announce a 3G iPhone for Europe ?
Interestingly enough, Vodafone reduced their price plans for their 3G data contracts on Monday.
With iPhone sales high, with over 500,000 sold in the first weekend, this information may reach us by the end of the week, according to Newswirless.net
Heres the Newswireless Article
‘It looks like it’s a triumph for Steve Jobs, after all: despite all the problems caused by a registration logjam for the iPhone, Apple reckons it will be able to announce a million sales by Thursday. That will probably be the moment to reveal the Euro iPhone deal, say sources.
Guy Kewney
Questions arose about just how popular the iPhone was, when the expected long tailbacks to buy last Friday night were cleared within an hour or so.
And then news started coming in about problems in getting online, if Cingular thought you were a business user, and sceptics began to suggest that there was no big demand for the toy.
However, actual registrations through AT&T - not sales, but completed “activation” of iPhone accounts - showed that by last night, more than 600,000 users were online. At this rate, the magic million will be reached some time tomorrow (Wednesday) - possibly even sooner, say sources, who think that the number of customers who have bought (but still can’t use) their iPhones is very high.
The deal announcing Vodafone, T-Mobile and Carphone Warehouse as European sales channels for the 3G iPhone has been held up, say German sources, by legal quibbles.
“What we’re hearing is that there was a contract drawn up in Germany; but that when Vodafone’s Newbury lawyers saw it, they said they weren’t signing a contract under German law, and it had to be re-drafted under UK legislation,” said one insider.
That means that the figures - a million sold - are still flexible. If the magic million isn’t reached by Thursday, or the legal wrangle isn’t sorted, then the company faces a choice - announce next week, or go this week with some form of words which looks at the number ordered.’
Is Mr Kewney to believed this time? as his previous story didn’t pan out, I hope so, it would be great news for iPhone fans (myself included), in the UK and Europe if this is true.
Update:
It looks like this may pan out as the T-Mobile Germany deal has been confirmed by The Washington Post

UK will get a 3G iPhone, with Vodafone, T-Mobile and Carphone Warehouse Partnership

Guy J Keweny of Newswireless.net has revealed details of the new partnership between, Vodafone, T-Mobile and Carphone Warehouse, which will see the UK getting a 3G version of the iPhone.
Mr Keweny does seem to slam the iPhone in his article, with no foundation for his comments, all reports and reviews of the iPhone that I have read so far all seem to be positive, with the iPhone tipped to be Apple’s next revolutionary device.
Here are the full details
‘A new 3G (European) version of the iPhone will be launched Monday in the UK by Apple - in a join promotion with Vodafone, T-Mobile of Germany, and Carphone Warehouse. It should answer the disappointment with the US version of the iPhone which has been widely slammed for its poor performance as a phone.
Hints of the European launch emerged yesterday when Bill Condie of the London Evening Standard tipped Vodafone to be the official carrier, which will be confirmed Monday. But Voda is just part of the picture, with Apple going for a three-pronged European strategy with carriers - again, responding to disappointment in America with the exclusive deal with AT&T/Cingular.
Shipment date is still unknown, but “on course” for the year-end date predicted last October by Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
Vodafone is currently in an ideal position to take on the iPhone, because its 3G network is hugely under-utilised. Pricing on mobile data is normally prohibitive, but Vodafone has recently revised its 3G data charges down, following “rip-off” complaints from users.
It may even be possible that European data prices will match, or be an improvement on the eye-watering charges announced by AT&T in North America.
The iPhone requires a high speed Internet connection to function properly, both because of its excellent Internet browsing capacity, and also because of its requirement for high quality video, which limits the appeal of the US version.
Writer Condie quoted sources inside Credit Suisse which suggested that France Telecom was in line for a franchise. That is unlikely to be fulfilled, possibly because of Orange’s insistence on “strong branding” on any handset it carries. Orange has irritated several phone makers by insisting on disabling technical and user-oriented features which didn’t sit with Orange commercial policy.
The appointment of Carphone Warehouse as a virtual network carrier will be a big surprise, however.
T-Mobile CEO Rene Oberman was reported to be “ecstatic” at getting a joint contract, according to insiders. He’s expected to be present at the Apple party Monday when the new device is unveiled.
The American version, using only 2G phone technology, goes on sale today. Queues have been forming outside Apple (and other) retail outlets in New York since Tuesday this week.‘
I have just spoken to the press offices of Vodafone, Carphonewarehouse, and T-Mobile, and guess what, all three of them remained tight lipped with the standard ‘No Comment’ response.
Whether we get a 3G or a 2G iPhone here in the UK, I am not really bothered, the fact that we may finally know which carrier is getting it is enough for me.
