The perfect commuter bike - Hoy Hoy Rats

August 14, 2008 at 5:44 am

Yes ~ you’re absolutely right. The name’s got to go!  But the bike is a winner. The perfect commuter bike. Weaves through traffic and hits the straights like a Tour de France sprinter on a powder cocktail!  It may have one of the most stupid names since Marc Bolan decided to call his son Rolan, but the Hoy Hoy Rats has great promise as a commuting road bike.

Pros Speed. Agility, particularly out of the saddle. Climbing ability. Ideal for long straights and weaving
Cons Slightly harsh response over speed humps, potholes and cobbles. Speed demons could find themselves wanting a wider spread of gears. Seatpost with integrated rear light a bit silly.

Great for doing tricks on, the BikeBoard comes with alloy pegs so most of the tricks you’ve learnt on a BMX can be pulled off here to! Put it through it’s paces in the Skatepark and it won’t let you down. Use BikeBoard to hone your balancing skills before you progress any other board sports.

Folding wheels makes bike transport easy

February 4, 2008 at 12:30 pm

Duncan Fitzsimmons a UK designer, freelance industrial designer and  mountain biker has invented a folding wheel made up of carbon fiber. The carbon fiber wheels have numerous hinges, which make it possible to fold the wheel and thus solve the problem of bulk. The completely foldable bike could then be fitted in a bag and conveniently carried along in a train or bus.

Fully functional wooden bike with chain

January 24, 2008 at 7:42 am

16 year old Marco Facciola has created a fully working wooden bike including a linked chain using only wooden and glue.

I was mostly concerned that the wooden chain would break. I researched the strength of different types of wood and built jigs to test the stresses that each of the chain’s components would undergo during use. First, I used my weight (150 lbs) to see if the wood could endure this amount of force. Then, my father would stand on the jig. I calculated that my dad’s weight would be twice the force each chain component would need to withstand. I made the specs high to ensure the chain and sprockets would work even if the wood had imperfections. During testing, I made adjustments to the chain’s components, and once I had it figured out, I realized that completing the project was within my grasp.

Check out this lifting vehicle which will be available as Do-It-Yourself kit for $50,000. The ILV uses a counter-rotating rotor lifting system and gets its power from two 105 horsepower, Hirth F-30, 2 cycle, 4 cylinder engines with dual ignition and forced air cooling. Engine power comes through two 2.64:1 engine gearboxes. If one of the engines fails, the other one can still sustain the flight. The ILV can soar over trees and houses requiring pilot skills equal only to riding a motor bike. Control of the ILV is obtained by simply shifting your body weight. The kit currently under development in the United States is dubbed PAM 200.

Check out this concept digital valve cap from designer John Wrighston.

concept - the digital valve cap

It replaces your existing bike cap, and gives a readout of the tyre pressure.

The Digital Valve Cap is powered by a small cell battery, and its an interesting concept, but unless it comes with some sort of locking feature, I can’t imagine it staying on your bike for long.
