Sports Car turns into a boat at the touch of a button
The Rinspeed Splash unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show can reach 125mph on the road and accelerates to 60mph in 5.9 seconds and its performance on water is impressive too, reaching an impressive 45 knots, fast enough for water skiing or knee boarding. The secret of the car is hydrofoil, a nautical technology used to lift the hull of boats from the water to increase speed and the cars body is watertight and special buoyancy chambers provide extra lift.

Cool Gadgets - The Worlds Smallest Solar Powered Car
You may remember the mini solar powered car that we featured a while back on the site, well you can now get your hands on a version of this tiny solar powered vehicle.

Solar cars are, unfortunately, still in the research and development phase, although we saw one recently that drove from Texas to New York in 5 days. Despite being impressive, it’ll likely be years before we have one sitting in the driveway, charging. Until then this working miniature model will have to keep us entertained.
The world’s smallest solar powered car - it zooms along when the sun shines on the solar panel. No batteries - it gets its power just from the sun. No assembly required. Measures a tiny 3.3 x 2.2 x 1.4 cm. When the sun shines on the solar panel, the panel makes electricity that turns the motor and the wheels.
The Worlds smallest solar powered car is available to buy online for $19.99 (about £10) from ThinkGeek.

Cool Gadgets - Mini Remote Controlled Cars
Check out these mini remote controlled cars from ThinkGeek.

Normally tiny R/C cars are hard to drive and control like crap. They zip off your desk and land in the trash the minute you hit the gas. Not these precision ChoroQ Qsteer Mini R/C Racers imported from japan.
Amazingly we were able to zoom these mini cars all over our desk with nary a fender bender. Hit the turbo button on the top of the remote for even more speed. Choose from cute versions of the Nissan 350Z or the Mazda RX-8. Independent channels mean you can pit these mini sports cars against each other in a desktop duel to your stapler.
Here is a video of them in action.
These mini R/C cars are available to buy online for $14.99 (about £7.50) from ThinkGeek.com

Cool Concept - The Volkswagen Viseo
I dont normally feature cars on the site and if I had the time, I would definately have an auto blog as well, but check out this concept Volkwagen Viseo from designer Marc Kirsch.

Marc Kirsch’s diploma project was created in collaboration with Volkswagen design in Wolfsburg Germany. A three-seat prototype car powered by an electric engine. The project was created considering the visual and conceptional influence of internationally renowned architect Santiago Calatrava. Kirsch created a vehicle that enables a higher level of comfort whilst enhancing the driving experience and promoting ecological values. The target was to create a visionary concept car, shaped and based on the Calatravian motto of “dynamic balance” through the use of new technologies.
The popular shapes used by Calatrava are recognized in the design of the Viseo concept with a large glass surface area completely covered in a flexible OLED film. This guarantees an innovative safety and communication concept allowing the vehicle to communicate externally.

Microsoft And Siemens VDO AG Confirm In Car Entertainment Partnership
Microsoft and Siemens VDO have confirmed a partnership to co develop in car navigation systems and entertainment systems.

The two companies said on Friday the first Siemens products based on Microsoft software should go into production in 2009.
Siemens VDO also makes driver-assistance and safety systems.
“In addition, Siemens VDO will also be able to actively help shape Microsoft Auto and license platform-compliant applications, such as navigation functions, for third-party suppliers,” a joint statement from the two companies said.
The companies said their first milestone would be a multimedia platform that would make it possible to integrate consumer-electronic functions and portable devices.
“Consequently, new solutions in consumer electronics will be adapted for in-vehicle use more quickly and easily, since it will only be necessary to add individual software components,” they said.
“This helps close the gap between the short development cycles in communications and information technology and the comparatively long product cycles in automotive engineering.”
Sounds like an intersting partnership, lets just hope there are no BSOD’s when you are doing 70 down the motorway.
