Google Android

February 11, 2008 at 8:57 am

Texas Instruments Inc will demonstrate a prototype cell phone based on Android at the Mobile World Congress trade show, the highly anticipated mobile phone operating system being built by Google.

The device will allow “one button access” to key applications such as Web browsing, e-mail, messaging and video, making it easier for consumers to use such features. The prototype handset will run on TI’s OMAP850 phone processor, which includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth short-range wireless connectivity.

Google had said while a number of companies would demonstrate Android products at the wireless trade show, the prototypes would give no real indication of the actual devices customers would ultimately be able to buy. TI is part of a group of about 30 companies that said they would support Google’s operating system, which is based on Linux, an open-source software platform. UK chip designer ARM Holdings is also expected to show prototypes of devices based on Android at the show.

Google Teams with Dell to Topple iPhone

February 1, 2008 at 9:47 am

There is talk of Google & Dell teaming up to take on the Apple iPhone. The two biggest dogs in their respective yards, could pool together their resources and may just may have enough musclepower to topple the iPhone behemoth. Neither Google nor Dell are confirming (or denying) these rumors, so this is reduced to just rumblings on the Interweb at this point. Dell has dabbled in the PDA market before, so it’s only a short leap to arrive in smartphone territory. Current word has the Google-Dell hybrid making some of announcement at the 3GSM World Conference in Barcelona next month. We will keep you posted.

Open Source GPS Module developed for the iPhone

December 16, 2007 at 9:36 am

Some clever guys over at the part foundry have developed a GPS module for the Apple iPhone.

gps iphone module

The unit doesn’t look to pretty at the moment, but I am sure it will look good when it goes into production.

They have got it working with Google Maps at the moment, check out this video of it in action.

What is interesting is that the module will be open source when it goes on sale, which means that anyone can develop a GPS application to run with it.

You will need an unlocked iPhone at the moment to run it, this is a very interesting development it would be so handy to have GPS on the iPhone.

Google Announce the Google Phone

November 5, 2007 at 4:56 pm

google phone

Google has announced the Google Phone, and instead of a phone that’s manufactured by just one company, it’s an open software platform that’s going to be loaded on phones made by HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung. Those phones are going to be available in the US on Sprint and T-Mobile by the second half of 2008—plus, it’s going to be available in China, Japan, Germany, Italy, and Spain on their respective carriers.

No word on the UK as yet, as usual we will probably have to wait a lot longer than the US and the rest of Europe.

The 34-member Open Handset Alliance, as the group is called, also includes many of the leading makers of mobile phone chips, like Broadcom, Intel, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments, as well as SiRF Technology Holdings, Marvell Technology Group, Nvidia and Synaptics. EBay (which owns the Internet calling service Skype), Nuance Communications, NMS Communications and Wind River Systems are also members of the group.

The technology is expected to provide cellular handset manufacturers and wireless operators with capabilities that match and potentially surpass those using smartphone software made by Apple, Microsoft, Nokia, Palm, Research in Motion and others. In contrast to the existing competitors, Google’s software will be offered freely under “open source” licensing terms, meaning that handset manufacturers will be able to use it at no cost and be free to add new features to differentiate their products.

3 Skype Phone - Full Review - Everything you need to know about the 3 Skype Phone

November 4, 2007 at 1:43 pm

I have been using the 3 Skype Phone for about a week, now and I have say say I am impressed.

The 3 Skype Phone is a merging of two technologies, Skype and mobile phones. This is a first for mobile phone companies and a bold move by 3 Mobile as you get completely free calls to any other Skype user.

3 Skype Phone Review

The Skype function works exactly like Skype does on your PC, you log in and out the same way and it displays all your contacts.

Initially when I received the 3 Skype Phone to review, I thought the Skype feature was a great gimmick, but after using it over the last week I have found out how useful this can be, being able to call anyone of your Skype contacts from wherever you are is really useful and I can see this feature being of great benefit to business users, as well as the every day Skype user.

The 3 Skype Phone itself is a pretty nifty little device, weighing just 86g and measuring just 100 x 44 x 13.6mm, and it comes in a choice of three colours, black, white/pink and white/blue.

You can either buy the phone on a monthly contract, the cheapest 3 offer is £12 per month, the phone is free on this option or you can buy the Pay as You Go option for £49.99. All Skype calls are completely free, and on the PAYG option all you need to do to benefit from the free Skype calls is top up the credit on the phone by £10 a month.

There are quite a lot of other features on the phone including an MP3 player, a 2.0 mega-pixel camera, and a web browser.

The web browser is pretty good, and as the 3 Skype Phone is 3G enabled it is fast too. 3 Mobile have some great services available, including Mobile TV with channels like BBC1, ITV1, the Comedy Channel, BBC News 24 and lots more.

3 Skype Phone Review

There are also some other great services like Yahoo Search, Windows Live Messenger, Google search, Facebook and YouTube.

All in all the 3 Skype phone is an amazing little mobile, packed with features and for the price you can’t go wrong.

I would love to see 3 Mobile roll out the Skype feature across their mobile phone range, as this would revolutionise the mobile phone industry, and would benefit their customers, imagine if every mobile phone had Skype built in and the calls were free.

What 3 Mobile have done is have the balls to install a feature like Skype on a mobile phone, where the other mobile phone operators have been scared too in case they loose revenue, I think the 3 Skype Phone will be a big hit for 3 mobile.

Rumor - Google to announce the Google Phone on Monday

November 3, 2007 at 2:49 pm

According to the Wall Street Journal Google plans to make an annoucement on Monday regarding the much rumored Google Phone.

google phone

The company looks set to make a splash in the mobile market on Monday, announcing an alliance with various handset makers and cellphone operators around the world that are willing to push its “open” platform for cellphone applications, sources say. It’s always possible the announcement’s timing could change, but Monday looks like the day at this point.

The U.S. carriers likely to be part of the announcement are T-Mobile and Sprint, according to our sources, but there could be others by the time Google says its piece. While Sprint appears to be agreeing to work with Google to put the Web giant’s new Linux-based open operating system into phones, T-Mobile will probably go even further: the company has worked with Google for months on plans to build Google-powered phones with a variety of Google software and applications. As far as handset partners for Google, Taiwan’s HTC is a likely bet, our sources say. Samsung, LG, and SonyEricsson are also possible, but we’ll wait and see the full roster. Equally interesting will be who isn’t on the list.

Don’t expect to see any devices soon – the middle of next year is the earliest Google-powered phones could come to market.

What will the impact be? Well, Google is trying to remake cellphones in the model of the Web, making them as open as possible to new applications in areas like social networking and map-based services. It’s too early to tell whether this will be a revolution in cellphones – or just an evolution that improves on the relatively open platforms already out there, like rival Microsoft’s Windows mobile. If the partnerships result in Google-branded devices hitting the market, we’ll get a chance to see how much pull the Google name really has in the wireless market. We’ve already seen the pull Apple has.
