World’s First Updatable Holographic Display

February 10, 2008 at 7:47 am

Researchers at the University of Arizona have broken a technological barrier by making three-dimensional holographic displays that can be erased and rewritten in minutes. The holographic displays – which are viewed without special eyewear – are the first updatable three-dimensional displays with memory ever to be developed, making them ideal tools for medical, industrial and military applications that require “situational awareness.”

The device basically consists of a special plastic film sandwiched between two pieces of glass, each coated with a transparent electrode. The images are “written” into the light-sensitive plastic, called a photorefractive polymer, using laser beams and an externally applied electric field. The scientists take pictures of an object or scene from many two-dimensional perspectives as they scan their object, and the holographic display assembles the two-dimensional perspectives into a three-dimensional picture.

Google Teams with Dell to Topple iPhone

February 1, 2008 at 9:47 am

There is talk of Google & Dell teaming up to take on the Apple iPhone. The two biggest dogs in their respective yards, could pool together their resources and may just may have enough musclepower to topple the iPhone behemoth. Neither Google nor Dell are confirming (or denying) these rumors, so this is reduced to just rumblings on the Interweb at this point. Dell has dabbled in the PDA market before, so it’s only a short leap to arrive in smartphone territory. Current word has the Google-Dell hybrid making some of announcement at the 3GSM World Conference in Barcelona next month. We will keep you posted.

Charge your mobiles wirelessly

January 31, 2008 at 8:37 am

MWG has announced that by mid-year, it will ship mobiles and PDAs that use a charging plate rather than a cable to charge. The inductive charger allows multiple devices to be charged on it at once and gives short charging period. Inductive power sends current obtained from a wall adapter through a coil in the charging plate. As current flows through the plate, it generates a magnetic field, which in turn induces a current to flow to the receiving device.
