New PS3 chips slash build prices in half
Changes to the hardware SONY uses in it’s PS3, including changes to the cell processor are helping SONY nearly half the cost of building each PS3 Unit. Japanese analysts responsible for revealing the figures also suggest that - in spite of Sony’s hopes - the games section of the firm will still lose money this fiscal year. Nikko Citigroup reckons last year’s £1 billion gaming loss will reduce to £715 million this year before turning around in 2009.

Sony PS3 sales rise after the price cut
Sales in the Sony PS3 have risen over 250% in the US and have also overtaken the Wii in Japan for the first time.

Latest figures from the US show price-cutting there has seen sales leap by around 250 per cent in the week ending 11 November, compared to weeks before the October price snip and launch of the new 40GB model.
In Japan, a traditional Nintendo stronghold, it’s the same story with the PS3 finally managing to outsell the mighty Wii to the tune of over 20,000 consoles in the last week.
I suspect that the main reason the PS3 overtook the Wii in Japan is because of the worldwide shortage of the Nintendo Wii.
Stock of the Wii is selling out as soon as it hits the shelves, and the demand over the Christmas period is going to be huge, but Nintendo seem to have trouble keeping up with the demand for the Wii, so I suspect a lot of people who can’t get their hands on a Wii will be buying a PS3.

DiVX is coming to the Sony PS3

DiVX has announced that the Sony PS3 will soon have DiVX onboard.
“Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format,” said DivX CEO Kevin Hell.
DivX, Inc. is a digital media company that enables consumers to enjoy a high-quality video experience across any kind of device. DivX creates, distributes and licenses digital video technologies that span the “three screens” comprising today’s consumer media environment—the PC, the television and mobile devices.
Over 100 million DivX Certified devices have shipped into the market from leading consumer electronics manufacturers. DivX also offers content providers and publishers a complete solution for the distribution of secure, high-quality digital video content. Driven by a globally recognized brand and a passionate community of hundreds of millions of consumers, DivX is simplifying the video experience to enable the digital home.
This is good news for the PS3 adding DiVX support, now all we need is Apple to add DiVX support to their iPhone and iPods (somehow I can’t ever see this happening), and we won’t need to spend hours converting all our DiVX files to various formats so they can play on different devices.

Cool Mods - The Water Cooled PS3
Check out this water cooled PS3.

We’ve yet to hear a single complaint about Sony’s monolith overheating, but that didn’t stop PS3 fan (and dragon aficionado) Dragonpower from drilling some holes into the bottom of his PS3, running liquid coolant over the processors, and adding some extra fans just for good measure. The end result: 32ºC (90ºF, 305.15ºK) under heavy load. Oh, and it’s “almost dead silent,” which we’re assuming is a step down from “dead silent.”

It will be replaced by the new Value Pack, which will feature a backwards compatible 60GB PS3, one Sixaxis wireless controller, two first-party titles, and will cost £349 (about $712)–a £76 (about $155) price drop from the current price of £425 (about $868).

Is Sony about to reduce the cost of the UK PS3 to £300 ready for Christmas ?
According to Stuff.tv, and a few other websites, Sony is about to drop the price on the PS3 from £425 to £300 ready for the Christmas rush.

The rumor is that a PS3 will go on sale shortly with a 40Gb hard drive priced at the same price as the Xb0x 360 Elite.
There is also speculation that this new model PS3 will come with two USB ports, no media card reader and won’t have any backward compatibility.
Sony have said that the rumor is just ‘rumor and speculation’, the interesting thing is that they haven’t denied it.
Now a PS3, with a Blu-ray player for 300 notes (although it may be a stripped down version) might just get the PS3 some interest.
I have to say, if this pans out I might just be tempted to take the plunge.
